About Us

Stan Pemberton from Howick started DTR as Dominion Television Services (DTS), in the early 1960's. DTS rented out black and white televisions, due to the expensive cost of televisions and high failure rates. In 1969 DTS was purchased by Thorn and became Dominion Television Rentals. By 1973 Dominion Television Rentals had around 13,000 customers renting black and white televisions. Late 1973 saw the introduction of colour televisions, commencing the next surge in renting televisions.

The late 1970's saw the introduction of VCRs, again this new technology meant renting was the preferred option over owning. The momentum continued with the introduction of audio systems in 1988 and whiteware in 1994.

As technology improved and the preference moved from renting to owning, DTR introduced easi-own, a hire purchase proposition in 1992.

In 1997 DTR bought out Group Rentals accounts.

In 2001 DTR introduced easi-cash, lending cash loans between $500 and $1000.

In the early 2000's DTR introduced the brand DTR LeasePlus, the focus was commercial long term leases and short term hire.

In 2006 DTR was bought out by the then General Manager, Mark Spring and CEO of Thorn Rentals Australia and New Zealand, Gordon Howlett. They are now the Managing Director and Chief Executive Chairman of DTR (Thorn New Zealand Ltd).
